CF18759 -- A Surviving Warrior

As befits their role in defending Canada in the Hot Cold War years, old Klunks are found all over the country: on fancy pedestals, in military museums, in small private museums run by people with a sense of history.

CF18759 had a long history in 416 squadron. What follows are some then-and-now photos, some exciting moments in her life, and a list of all the flights she made carrying the LYNX emblem.

The latest 759 Story (dateline June 2009) came to us via Lloyd Graham. It seems that Joe Gulyes - whose name, together with Nav Pete de Smedt's, is in the list of those who flew in her - commissioned a painting of 759, to be done by a Mr Allan Botting of Calgary. Joe died without seeing the finished art, but it can now be found in http://aircraftpaintings.googlepages.com/ .

Allan has also offered the painting for display in Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame in Wetaskwin, AB, with a dedication to Joe. The museum curator has accepted the offer, and it will soon find its permanent home there.

18759's  Shortest Flight?

The following is an account of what I'm sure must have been "759's shortest flight"!

Late in the evening on July 8th 1960, while returning from a night practice exercise, the crew operating aircraft 759 discovered that their radios were no longer functioning. On a normal summer night, finding one's way back to the St-Hubert airport (located just south east of Montréal) would be a simple task. Unfortunately, this evening, the entire Montréal area was alive with numerous VERY LARGE Thunder Storms!

Carefully working their way around the worst of the storms, they descended and approached St-Hubert from the east. Suddenly, with their objective almost in sight, the entire area went pitch black due to a power failure!  Without radio contact, they quickly realized that they would be unable to get any information as to when (or even IF) the power might be restored.

At this point it appeared that their only real option might well be to get well clear of the Montréal area before they exhausted their fuel, and choose a location to eject.

SUDDENLY... out of the dark... a few miles ahead and just to the right, was a set of RUNWAY LIGHTS!

Almost without hesitation, the throttles were closed, the gear and flaps extended, and the aircraft was on the runway!

All of this had happened with only seconds to spare. Now, as the aircraft slowed and the pilot began looking for an appropriate "turn off",  the realization that this was definitely not St-Hubert became obvious...   At St-Hubert, all the "turn offs" from Runway 24 were "to the right". Here, all the turn offs appeared "to the left"!

How soon, after they had turned off the runway, they discovered they were actually at DORVAL Airport* and not St-Hubert, I'm not sure.  What we can be sure of though, is that the expression "any port in a storm" would certainly have new meaning in the future!

The crew then located a place to park, shut the aircraft down, and proceeded to a phone to let the Squadron know that they, and the aircraft, were safe and on the ground.  Due to both the weather and the late hour, the crew was instructed to "secure the aircraft" and return to base by ground transportation.

_  .......oOo........  _

My part in the story began when my Navigator, F/O Peter Donnelly and myself (F/O Gordon Paler) arrived at the Squadron early the next morning (July 9th) and were assigned the task of proceeding to Dorval to retrieve "759".

The storms of the previous night had long since moved on, leaving a crystal clear morning, so we knew the fuel still in the aircraft from the night before would be ample for the short trip home. What we couldn't be sure of was, what was the status of "the radios"?

As we would need a driver to return the car that would take us to Dorval in any event, we proceeded to acquired the services of a "Communications Tech." who could do both jobs.

Unfortunately, not long after we arrived at Dorval, it became obvious that the radios were not going to be an easy fix. To get a "replacement" installed would take most of the day and even then would be no guarantee of a complete fix!   Was there any other way?

As I needed to file a VFR Flight Plan in any event, I decided to first visit "the Tower" where I explained our situation. As they were quite interested in their rather unusual "guest aircraft" and seemed very cooperative, I ask if there was any chance they might agree to coordinate a "nordo" (no radio) departure off Runway 10 (which pointed almost directly at St-Hubert)?

With the current light NE wind, the regular commercial traffic was landing and departing off runways 06L & 06R.  We all agreed that if we could be in position to take advantage of a temporary lull in landing traffic, we could be out of their way without causing a delay to anyone.  What remained to be worked out was... when could we be ready to go... what kind of signals would we use to indicate "cleared to start",  "cleared to taxi", as well as the route to be taken to "the button" of Runway 10, and last, but not least "Take Off Clearance".

All of this was arranged in short order, a flight plan filed, and Peter and I proceeded back to the aircraft to await our clearance to "Start". The rest all went as planned and with little or no delay, we were in position, received our "green light" and were on our way. Gear up, flaps up and level at 1500ft, we quickly covered the distance of about 10 miles between the two airports... a slight left turn to line up with Runway 06 at St-Hubert, gear down, flaps down, another "green light" and we were home!

Total elapsed time, .... a little under 3 minutes to taxi out .... just under 4 minutes in the air and 3 more to taxi in, all of which, I'm almost certain, would turn out to be...

759's SHORTEST FLIGHT!
